Auction.com has named John Ken as SVP of Marketing, a role focused on growing the platform’s buyer base, expanding its marketing technology, and building education programs for people who are new to distressed real estate auctions.
“We have a huge opportunity to drive education and assist individuals to become successful buyers and sellers,” Ken said. “That’s part of our responsibility to set people up for success.”
Auction.com Chief Operating Officer Mike Kilander framed the hire as part of a broader push to sharpen how the company reaches and develops its customer base.
“John brings the performance marketing and data discipline that our marketplace growth strategy needs right now,” Kilander said. “His experience building education and lifecycle programs at scale will help us reach more buyers and get them ready to participate with confidence.”
Ken’s background spans e-commerce, publishing, and enterprise technology at companies, including IBM. He later moved into consumer credit, personal finance marketplaces, and media networks as head of customer lifecycle and marketing technology at Experian, working across a base of more than 80+ million U.S. consumers. He said the complexity of credit education and empowerment carries directly into distressed real estate.
“Credit is an incredibly complex topic which carries a high responsibility to support consumers at key financial moments, much like distressed real estate,” Ken said. “The skills and marketing experience I built in that world are extremely portable here.”
At Auction.com, he’ll focus on broadening the platform’s buyer base beyond its core of distressed-property investors, including re-engaging past buyers and building structured education paths for people exploring distressed real estate auctions for the first time. He also plans to expand the channels buyers use to stay engaged with the marketplace, including SMS, the Auction.com mobile app, and Remote Bid™, alongside existing owned channels and growing off-property paid reach and engagement.
His near-term priorities include building a customer-centric marketing capability, improving model maturity and usage across touchpoints to provide more relevant, timely and helpful experiences. The utilization of a “next best action” model will be instrumental in preparing early tenure and first-time buyers for a successful purchase.
The role also includes oversight of digital marketing across paid media, search, lifecycle, product marketing, and data science, working closely with Auction.com’s product, data, and sales teams to connect marketing performance to the buyer and seller experience.
Ken was drawn to Auction.com by its leadership team and what he described as an “experts leading experts” culture, distinct from the various management structures he encountered earlier in his career. After more than two decades split across e-commerce, publishing, SaaS, martech consulting, and consumer credit, he said it was important that his next adventure is with people he respects, in an industry that is new to him and holds a purposeful mission.
Outside the office, Ken builds his own computers and Raspberry Pi streamers, calling himself a “total geek” at heart. He’s also a long-time audiophile and vinyl collector, with classic jazz a nightly ritual in his house, a hobby he shares with his wife, a retired finance executive who now spends part of her free time as a hobbyist violinist. He also loves to wrench on older-era Japanese cars and build bicycles, drawn more to the mechanics of assembly than to riding them, and jokes that it’s just another version of “adult LEGO.”
