What Auction Buyer Optimism Means for Housing in 2027

Auction buyers are growing more optimistic about 2027, even with a sluggish economy and housing market. A rising share of distressed-property buyers plan to increase their purchases in the months ahead, and lower acquisition costs are the biggest reason why.

  • 39% of buyers surveyed in Q3 2026 plan to buy more in the next three months than the last three — up from 38% in the previous quarter.
  • 23% say current market conditions make them more willing to buy at auction, up from 19% a year ago.
  • 41% point to lower acquisition costs as the top reason, the highest share of any factor measured.

Buyer Demand Signals Keep Climbing

More than 1,000 Auction.com buyers surveyed in the third quarter of 2026 said they plan to buy more distressed properties in the next three months than they did in the previous three months — 39 percent, up from 38 percent the quarter before and continuing a year-long upward trend.

That optimism tracks with a broader shift in sentiment. Nearly a quarter of buyers (23%) said current market conditions are making them more willing to buy at auction, up from 19 percent a year ago. Lower acquisition costs are the clearest driver: 41 percent of buyers cited lower costs as a reason they’re more willing to buy, the highest share of any factor in the survey.

The pricing data backs that up. Foreclosure auction pricing eased 3% from the previous quarter and was down 4 percent from a recent peak in Q4 2025, according to the report. The decline was widespread, with pricing down from a year ago in 53 of 99 metro areas analyzed.

Buyers are also seeing reasons for confidence beyond price. About a quarter of those surveyed said a strong fix-and-flip market is making them more willing to buy, and the same share cited a strong rental market.

What Rising Confidence Means for Sellers and the Market

Sustained buyer demand is a useful signal for sellers, particularly those willing to adjust pricing to match current conditions. If that demand holds, sellers can expect continued interest at auction into 2027.

The trend may also point to something bigger: struggling local housing markets getting closer to a bottom. Local community developers who buy at auction tend to be reliable barometers of what’s ahead, because accurately reading future market conditions is central to how they stay in business. The more bullish these buyers are now, the better the outlook may be for the broader retail housing market in 2027.
